On our Doorstep

In medieval times Spon Street (including Upper Spon Street) was a busy street leading to Spon Gate, one of the main entrance gates into the City of Coventry. The position of the original Spon Gate is marked in the surface of the road near the Foyer and a small section of the old city wall still stands in The Foyer garden!

The remains of a medieval bridge are located at the far end of Upper Spon Street – this crosses the River Sherbourne and would have been an important and busy crossing point in medieval times.

Over the road from the Foyer you will see topshops – these are buildings which have a top floor with large windows to provide the extra light needed to weave cloth, important in the 17 and 1800’s.
